Mokgabudi Lucky Masilela
Mokgabudi Lucky Masilela is an ICT industry stalwart whose best known role is as CEO of ZACR (ZA Central Registry) NPC. Here he was able to overcome several years of legal obstacles in a US Court that finally saw the delegation to ZACR of the rights to administer the new .africa (‘dotAfrica’) geographic Top Level Domain (gTLD).
His tenure as ZACR CEO began in early 2014 with a vision to accelerate transformation within the South African DNS (Domain Name System) industry while staying true to certain technical core competencies. Under his leadership, ZACR has registered more than 1.1 million .za domains and also introduced the city domains of .joburg, .durban and .capetown. He is an African Internet pioneer in every sense of the word with the commercial launch of dotAfrica having attracted well over 10 000 successful domain name registrations to date.
Mr Masilela was in 2017 elected as a co-recipient of the African ICT Champion Award by the African ICT Alliance (AfICTA) on the eve of the 5th AfICTA Summit. The award was primarily in recognition of his work in delivering the awesome potential of the dotAfrica domain name to the people of Africa. The Alliance promotes the use of the Internet to advance Africa’s development and the Africa ICT Champion recognises business leaders in Africa who have distinguished themselves on Africa’s journey to an Information Society.
As a respected figure within the local Information, Communications & Technology (ICT) sector, Mr Masilela was a member of the team tasked with reassessing the country’s National ICT Policy. He is also the former long-standing Chairman of the South African Communications Forum, a Councillor of the B-BBEE ICT Sector Council, a Board member of AFRINIC and Deputy Chairperson of the ICT Policy Review Panel (South Africa).
His career was founded on a 17-year grounding at Siemens SA. His specific interest in the DNS industry stemmed from his later involvement in the regular worldwide meetings of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names & Numbers (ICANN).
